Ensuring the show goes on: mitigating service continuity risks in cloud services

In today’s digital age, Chief Information Officers (CIOs) are faced with a critical decision regarding the deployment of cloud services versus on-premises solutions. Among the myriad of factors to consider, one of the most pressing concerns is ensuring service continuity. The impact of service interruptions can be significant, affecting not only organizational efficiency but also end-user satisfaction. At Oneview Healthcare, we take service continuity seriously, and are mitigating risk for our customers by introducing Offline Mode.

The Importance of Service Continuity

Service continuity is paramount in the realm of healthcare technology, where seamless access to critical systems can directly impact patient care. Clinical systems, such as the EHR, serve as the backbone of healthcare operations, facilitating timely access to patient data and supporting informed decision-making by healthcare providers. Any disruption in service availability can potentially compromise patient safety and hinder the delivery of quality care.

While some may perceive the continuity of non-clinical services, such as patient entertainment, as less critical, its importance should not be understated. For patients undergoing treatment or recovering in hospitals, access to entertainment serves as a source of comfort and distraction, contributing to their overall well-being and experience during their stay.

Service Continuity in a Cloud-Powered World

Cloud-delivered solutions offer numerous benefits in terms of scalability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. They also introduce unique challenges related to service continuity. Factors outside of the organization’s control like internet connectivity and third-party cloud services can add more specific risks that need to be considered.

Recognizing the importance of mitigating service continuity risk for our customers, our cloud-based Care Experience Platform (CXP) now includes an innovative Offline Mode feature, specifically designed to ensure continuous access to entertainment services for hospitalized patients.

In the event of an outage that prevents bedside devices from reaching the Oneview cloud service, the devices automatically switch to offline mode, allowing them to continue watching TV shows and movies without interruption. As part of this switch, patient data is wiped from the device, to prevent any patient privacy breach. Devices automatically reconnect when the service becomes available again. By leveraging this technology, healthcare organizations can safeguard against the potential impact of service disruptions on patient experience, thereby enhancing satisfaction and assuring patient privacy.

Imagine a scenario: A patient eagerly anticipates watching the big ball game to lift their spirits during their hospital stay. Suddenly, their excitement is dampened as the TV goes black due to a service interruption. With Oneview’s Offline Mode, such disappointments become a thing of the past. Even if the cloud connection falters, patients can seamlessly continue watching their favorite shows and movies, ensuring that the show goes on uninterrupted.

Ensuring Cloud Continuity in Healthcare

While the adoption of cloud services presents numerous benefits in terms of scalability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness, it is imperative for CIOs to address concerns regarding service continuity. By partnering with cloud solution providers that understand the challenges and have built service continuity into their architecture, healthcare organizations can mitigate risks associated with cloud deployments and ensure uninterrupted access to critical services.
